Instructor Spotlight: Sadie Durbin

This month we take a peek into Sadie Durbin's world: where she gets her energy, why she loves to motivate us, and how she looks so good after having her two adorable boys. "Fitness is much more than just going to the gym and eating salads," she says, "it's a way of living life and it creates happiness in our souls, comfort in our own bodies, and just an overall feeling of satisfaction when we take care of ourselves." Hearing her enthusiasm and responding to her motivating "This is your hour!" and "Push yourself!" yells during class keeps Fusionistas coming back for more, leaving the studio sweaty and renewed. Here's the scoop on one hot, inspiring mama.

How did you start at Fusion?

Darby and I met in the same wine club, err I mean book club, through a mutual friend. One night she mentioned that she was going to start a "small business" with a friend, and I was just excited to try something new in the fitness world. I grew up as a dancer and attended the Kansas City School of Ballet (as well as Brooke, another Instructor Extraordinaire) but during college I quit dancing and took up running. Over the years I loved running but had lost a lot of definition and tone, and I immediately felt a difference when I started at Fusion. Then I started subbing a few classes and here I am; I discovered Fusion was the perfect way to combine three of my passions--fitness, motivation, and "presenting" or public speaking. I was hooked.

So fitness was always a part of your life? Why is it important to you?

Well like I said, fitness helps make you physically strong, but I think more importantly, mentally strong as well. I love that inner battle when you're doing mountain climbers or running up a hill and part of you wants to quit but the other part tunes into the music and pushes just a little bit harder...that kind of endurance can be applied to all sorts of other life moments to build character. Plus, I love hard work, because putting in all that effort naturally makes you feel strong, proud, and healthy!

Not many people would put "hard work" in the love category--where do you get your strong attitude?

I think it comes from the way I was raised in Cottonwood Falls, a small town in the Flint Hills. It's a wonderful farming community full of caring, hardworking people, so I learned a lot about dedication and found a deep appreciation for people who work with the land and animals from a young age. I still love to go home with my family and relax in the slower pace--just one of the benefits you receive from being in such a place.

Well you obviously worked hard to look so fit after giving birth to your twin boys, Austin and Jack. What sort of routine did you follow?
JACK
Well first of all I worked out and taught all through my pregnancy, which I believe is important. I had a C-Section, so wasn't allowed to workout hard-core until six weeks postpartum. During those first six weeks I walked and did the boring snoring elliptical, so I was excited to get back to teaching and taking classes at Fusion after I was cleared for workout. The hardest part was the fatigue, because as a new mom I practically never slept (as many of you know the deal.) But, I treated my workout time like I did anything else I had to get done in a day, and kept it a priority for ME. I think it's so important for new moms to take that hour not just to get rid of the baby weight, but releasing those endorphins makes a big difference in the way we feel, so helps us be better moms for the rest of the day. I depended on my husband and mom to help out so I could do it for my sanity, my body, and just myself. Now the boys are almost two--wowza!

Do you do anything outside of Fusion to work out now?

I teach about eight classes a week and personal train on top of that, so I'm pretty active most days. For my own workout I enjoy going for a good fast run once or twice a week and also taking classes at Fusion, because, let's face it, you can't push yourself as hard as someone else can push you! Running is my therapy though, I love getting a good sweat listening to my favorite music--it always helps me find perspective and leaves me feeling great.

Does your husband, Brice, workout too?

AUSTIN
Um, no, Brice doesn't exercise unless it's playing golf or if I force him (which is only fun for about five minutes until he starts whining and then we don't exercise together again for another three months, ha!) Thankfully he's a pretty healthy eater (with a love of chocolate) and only complains about my cooking when I use kale in every recipe.

Do you find it challenging to get your boys to eat healthy foods?

Not really, because they pretty much eat what we eat now. I'm not a chicken nugget kinda mama, and we like to expose them to all kinds of new foods. We want them to eat "adult" food so it's never like, "oh, we don't think you'll like this...", they like our leftovers and veggies and all that.

What's your nutrition philosophy?

I believe in the real deal--no fake sugars or fats. I don't count calories, but I do pay close attention to what I eat most of the time. I go by the 80/20 rule: 80% of the time I eat very healthy and 20% I can splurge, so I get to satisfy my cravings and don't feel deprived. We cook a lot at home, with most meals having a lot of vegetables, good grains, and lean protein. Brice and I love entertaining and cooking for people, so we're always trying new ideas. I'm not a vegetarian, but I like to go meatless a couple days a week. My biggest rule is eating things I can pronounce--if you read the label and you have no idea what it is, don't buy it!

So when you do allow a splurge, what's something you always go for?

Eee..definitely wine and cookies.

Do you ever have "pig-out" days? How do you deal with the common feelings of guilt or giving up that a lot of people have on those days?

Of course, any normal person does. I have this conversation all the time with my clients--just because you have one bad day doesn't mean you've sabotaged your whole diet and now you're fat. If you continue down that path then yes, that can happen. I just workout a little harder the next day and eat clean for a few days, and I'm back on track, no big deal. Working out and eating clean feels good.

Do you have a favorite healthy snack?

I love eating this little salad of black-eyed peas, cucumber, peppers, edamame, feta, lemon, and any other veggie that sounds good. I also have a weakness for popcorn, but I make it myself to keep it healthy and yummy, and then eat it with an apple or cheese.

Where do you like to shop for foods?

Whole Foods is one of my happy places. The produce department is huge and has a lot of different seasonal features that I can incorporate into my recipes so I don't get bored, plus it's great for our bodies to digest different foods. I also go to Farmer's Markets. I'm not a big Trader Joe's fan (GASP!) because I find when I shop there I end up with a lot of unnecessary calories from their frozen foods and snacks.

You know a lot about nutrition and fitness. Did you always want to work in the health industry?

Actually yes, I wanted to be a nutritionist in high school. But in college I took a different path and majored in journalism at KU. (However I did meet Brice while waitressing in college...funny how things work out.) After graduating I worked in the corporate world for a while, which taught me a lot, but I don't miss it at all. Being able to do what I am passionate about has been life-changing--I am a different person now that I get to help amazing clients who are the most kind, impressive women, and also work with the craziest, coolest chics. It may sound cheesy, but Fusion has truly changed my life. If it weren't for this path, I would probably be working a high-stress corporate job, travel all the time, never get to see my boys, be 25 pounds heavier and hate my job. Instead, I am in love with what I do--that fitness is such a huge part of my life, I get to help women reach their goals, and I genuinely enjoy myself through it all.

Your schedule allows you more time with Austin and Jack--how do you like being a mom?
I'm going to be honest: before I was pregnant, I was not one of those women who always wanted to be a mom--at some points I wasn't even sure I wanted to have kids. Then, we found out we were having TWO and oh my, there was no easing into it at that point! But I am completely obsessed with my little buddies. They are amazing people with passion, humor, and love that I never imagined. I had them at 30 weeks, so we spent the first six and a half weeks of their little lives in the NICU, which was a humbling, amazing experience. Going through the stress and fear, but also the love and support of the NICU team, changed the way I looked at GETTING to be a mom.

What's one of your favorite things about the boys?

Right now, I'm just melting when I pick them up from school and they come running towards me, so excited to see me. Gets me every time. (Brice and I remember these moments when they are having a meltdown and acting like animals, ha!) They are starting to talk, and it's so fun to see which words they pick up on and try to use. Both buds are saying "happy" and "please" a lot, two awesome words!

As a busy wife, mother, and full-time Fusionista, what would you do with one day all to yourself?

Oh wow, I'm not sure my mind can be that creative at this point! I would SLEEP in, until about 8, get up and have a good workout, and get a tasty coffee and breakfast. Then someone would do my hair and pick out my my clothes (not my strengths!) and I'd travel to a beach for the afternoon (this is a fantasy world.) Then I'd come home for dinner with my sweet family, put the boys to bed, and share a delicious bottle of expensive red wine with my hubby.

You are a big source of motivation to a lot of women at Fusion--do you ever feel pressure to be perfect as a fitness instructor?

Like when I look over my shoulder when I buy cookies at the grocery store? Ha! Joking aside, I really don't feel that pressure to be perfect. That's one of the many things I love about Fusion. It's a place where women come to spend time for themselves improving their health, making friends, and soaking up the positive energy. I am constantly inspired by our fabulous instructors and amazing clients. Each time I teach a class, I know it's that special hour for the women in the room, and I do my best to make it count.

How do you feel about women struggling with their confidence in the face of our media and culture being geared towards an almost unattainable beauty?

I think everyone struggles with confidence in certain seasons of their lives, and fortunately I'm in a really good spot right now where I feel like I know myself and I try to stay true to who I am. My priorities are my family/friends, my health, and my work. These are what guide my decisions and where I put my energy, and I think when you are strongly focused on what matters to you, you don't have as much time to struggle with confidence.

THE FUN FIVE

Favorite restaurant: For a casual spot, I love Mixx. Going fancy, I'd choose Capital Grille or Le Fou Frog, depending on the mood.
Favorite place to drink a glass of wine: My back porch.
Inspirational book: Hmmm, I haven't read a book since the boys were born--maybe I can answer this one in a few years :)
Beauty advice you like: Drink lots of water!
"I find my confidence in..." Running the country roads at my parent's house. That always brings me back to where I came from.

Instructor Spotlight: Brooke Degnan

This month we are sitting down with Fusion Instructor Brooke Degnan. The phrase "awww my abs" has come from most of our mouths the morning after her classes, as she loves training the core and has the sleek tummy to prove it. Dancing for the Kansas City Ballet and the Pacific Northwest Ballet for 15 years, we know where she gets her enviable ability to shoot her legs straight up in the air and why she keeps us on our toes for all those triceps lifts. She can make us sweat until our mats are slippery in Fusion, Mix, and Barre, but did you get to experience her subbing for TnT? Ouch! So where did she get her love of fitness and awesome motivational skills? ("Don't be a baby!" "You can do anything for 20 seconds!" "I'm not starting the countdown until everyone is in a plank!") Read on and get to know how she grew into such an inspiration to all her Fusionistas.

Brooke was born and raised here in KC, attending Pembroke Hill and then onto Southern Methodist University in Dallas. As much as she loved Dallas, she decided to head home and pursue her dance career with the Kansas City Ballet. Through her studies of dance and pilates she went on to become a personal trainer, when one of her clients led her to Fusion and we've had her since September 2008. "I went to one class and immediately told Darby and Shandi I wanted to teach...it is the most challenging class--not only in town, but across the country--that I had ever taken or taught, and I was in love."

Why were you hooked on Fusion?
There are a million things I love about Fusion. On a professional level, I love Fusion because I truly believe this concept is the ultimate recipe for fitness success -- a solid emphasis on forming lean muscle, pure devotion to creating a strong core, and an upbeat, fast-paced class to maintain an elevated heart rate. On a personal level, I love Fusion because of the friendship I have formed with Darby and the other instructors. We have a lot of fun together (sometimes too much??!!) and really do enjoy being around each other. Beyond that there’s also an immense level of respect we have for one another. I honestly can’t imagine a more perfect “working” environment. OH, and I really love our clients! It is so inspiring to see you guys get your butts kicked and keep coming back for more!

Aside from teaching and training, what other kinds of exercise do you enjoy?
I try to fit in a couple of yoga classes throughout the week as well as some running or walking. I like to mix it up as much as possible. Actually, my “back to school” resolution is to take more Fusion classes. It’s so fun to be the student every once and awhile!

Speaking of students, you have two kids, Jake 8, and Cate 5. What's a typical day like for you?

A normal day for me starts pretty early…I have personal training clients most early mornings throughout the week. When I’m not training clients, I’m teaching of course! When school is out at 3:10, I can usually be found driving to some sort of practice or game with the kids. One thing I love about being a mom is watching my kids grow into real people…you know, with personalities, opinions, and a sense of humor! I remember thinking when they were babies that I wanted them to stay babies forever. While I loved that baby stage, I realize now that I am loving every stage. It’s so fun to watch them play sports, to have interesting conversations, and to see them become such individuals.

What do you and your family like to do for fun?

I have a very big family and a lot of our free time is spent with them. My kids are all very close to their cousins and that’s so special for me and my husband Blaine to be a part of. (Little side note, although they met through mutual friends, Blaine was acutally a classmate of her older brother!) This summer we’ve spent a lot of time on the lake which we love. One of our family faves is going camping--not necessarily my favorite but the kids really love it! It’s awesome to be able to unplug for a day or two. No ipads, Xboxes, or devices of any kind!

Being a wife, mom, and working full time, what do you do to relax?
Relaxing? What’s that? Just kidding! By nature I am a very fidgety, active, can’t sit still kind of a gal. I almost have to force myself to sit down, take a breath and chill out for a minute. (And we had any doubts about this from taking her classes?!) I try to get a massage as often as possible, though it has been months since I’ve had one. When I do go, Cindy at Hollyday is the best in town!

Fitness and being healthy are obviously a big deal to you, have they always been?

Growing up, fitness was definitely an important aspect of my life. Not only because I was a ballet dancer but also because my whole family was very active. Two of my older brothers were all-state soccer players; 1 swam year round with the KC Blazers; and my younger brother played almost every sport under the sun. My mom placed a lot of importance on being active and eating well, and I am grateful for those lessons and am doing my best to pass on the wisdom to my kiddos.

What do you do to eat well and stay in such great shape?
Ah, nutrition advice...this question always makes me a bit nervous. I see what a struggle it can be for a lot of people to figure out what diet or program works for them, and I honestly believe the best advice is to get to know your own body REALLY well. Look back at a time in your life when you felt your best, looked your best, performed your best, etc. Examine your habits during those times. What was your diet like? Did you sleep 5 hours a night, or 12? Were you working out in the morning, afternoon, evening? Everyone is SO different and determining what works for YOU is the key. As an example, I don’t eat a lot of meat. I realized I don’t digest it very well and it just doesn’t make me feel good. I do eat a lot of complex carbohydrates--which may be considered off limits in a lot of programs, but it's what works for me. Another bit of advice: Everything in moderation! Balance is so important when it comes to either losing weight or maintaining it.

Many of us moms see inspiration in your body that has had two kids...did you find it difficult to lose the "baby weight"? (And is it still considered "baby weight" when my youngest is turning 4? haha..)
Well my pregnancies were different in that I had a condition called hypermesis--basically morning sickness for nine months. I was really sick, and couldn't even keep ICE down. So I didn’t really have a hard time losing the weight as I only gained about 18 pounds each time. I do think it took a good year though before I felt things were…um…where they used to be. The weight came off quickly but the tone and shape of course came after a lot of work!

Well all of your hard work has definitely paid off :) If you had one day to treat yourself, what would you do?

One day to myself??? This interview is like therapy! I clearly need to find more ME time as I am struggling to come up with anything! I guess I would probably sleep in, have some coffee and read the paper. Then I would head to a yoga class at my friend’s downtown studio. I might do some shopping on the plaza...though I would probably only buy makeup or something as I am a disposable product junkie! I would play tennis with my mom (does that count as being all by myself???) and then get a massage – from Cindy of course! And finally a nice dinner at home that Blaine has made. He’s a great cook! Again, does that count as being alone?? Probably not but oh well!

The Fun Five

Favorite Restaurant: Le Fou Frog, hands down. The food is delicious of course but I also love the urban vibe.

Best place to drink a glass of wine: My parent’s apartment on the Plaza because they have the best wine list in town! I love being there, being 9 stories high and looking out over the entire city...so cool.

Inspiring Book: The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield

Beauty advice I'd like to pass on: I’m not qualified for that! I guess if I had to dish it out…get a lot of sleep! Oh, and drink lots of water.

I find my confidence in…Believing that I am good at what I do! I love seeing people transform their bodies and watching them gain confidence in that feat. I have one client that I’ve been training for 10 years. 10 years!!! She never really had to transform her body as she has always been very fit, but the fact that she’s kept me around for so long gives me confidence in knowing I add value to her workouts. My family is also a huge source of confidence for me. We are all very supportive of each other and aren’t afraid to share praise, love, affection, etc. I don’t think there’s a day that goes by that my dad doesn’t tell me how proud he is of me. Even at 33 years old, I never get tired of hearing it!
Brooke's parents, four brothers & their spouses
If you haven't already, head to one of Brooke's classes for an intense, all-over workout that will leave you KNOWING you did your best. Along with the endorphins and tight core, Brooke also has such a positive, strong energy that stays with you for the rest of the day. Instructor Spotlight: Amy Hodes

When I started taking Amy Hodes’ classes at Fusion, I first noticed two things about her. One, her voice is that raspy, sultry voice that many women take advantage of sicknesses to accentuate, and two, her awesome buns of steel that inspire me to keep dipping further in barre classes when my own buns shake into exhaustion. Of course on top of that she has a fun, motivating way of teaching and can even crack a joke that gets us to laugh when our faces are scrunched in all sorts of crazy as we beg for the final countdown. Being that she’s also a certified Spin and Level 1 Yogafit instructor, she’s helped all types of women push themselves to better their bodies and minds. Good thing she found Fusion, “the hardest but most effective hour of exercise I’ve ever experienced,” because now we get to keep her.

Amy has lived in KC all of her life, attending St. Ann, then Bishop Miege High School and University of Missouri Columbia (Mizzou) for her English degree. She taught English at Shawnee Mission South for 5 years, until her and her husband Vince had their first son and she became a stay at home mom. They have three “little” boys, Beau 14, Tyler 12, and Vinny 9. Aside from her active family life at home, she also has two sisters Francie (another instructor at Fusion) and Wendy (a regular at Fusion) who live within 5 blocks of Amy and their parents. “I don’t know what I’d do without them,” she says, “I love to spend time with my sisters and friends.”
How did you get started at Fusion?
I’ve tried all different types of workouts: kick-boxing, aerobics, pilates, yoga, running, and spinning. I did gymnastics all through grade school and was a cheerleader in high school, but during in college sort of took a little hiatus from fitness to enjoy my social life. But then when I had Beau I really got serious about exercise to try and lose the baby weight; that’s when I found Fusion, right after it opened. I loved the constantly changing and unique classes that Shandi and Darby taught; it was unlike anything I had tried before. I enjoy the energy of group-fitness, and have tried classes all over KC and seriously nothing came close to what I experienced at Fusion.

So you knew you wanted to be involved in the teaching side right away?
I absolutely loved the challenge of the workouts and the results that I could see in my body, and it happened that Darby and Shandi were both pregnant so I told them I would love the opportunity to teach. My youngest had started first grade and I wanted to find something meaningful to do with my new free time. Being an instructor at Fusion has been so amazing for me, and I have been introduced to so many wonderful people. This allows me to combine my passions for teaching and fitness, and it’s so inspiring for me to see people’s bodies change as a result of their hard work here. Also Darby is the best, she is always open to new ideas we have and she’s so dedicated and passionate that her energy is contagious.

Keeping up an instructor’s body must be challenging. Do you do anything outside of teaching?
I’m not just saying this because I work here, but Fusion is my favorite place to exercise. I come to classes at least 4 days a week [in addition to teaching]. I’m competitive by nature so I like to challenge myself to keep improving. I enjoy running, spinning, doing new DVDs and taking fun classes when I’m out of town. It’s always exciting to see what’s new in the fitness world and stay informed of the trends that are popping up in NYC and California.
Francie, Fusionista Emily Baldwin, and Amy celebrating at the Fusion Rave

How do you keep up motivation to exercise, especially since you work in the fitness industry?
I HAVE to exercise. I need it to clear my mind and stay focused, and I always feel energized after a good morning workout. I like to feel healthy and strong. Obviously I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t appreciate the physical benefits of exercise; I think a fit, firm, strong body is sexy. Seeing the physical changes in your body and feeling stronger and healthier are great motivators. Working out requires discipline and it always feels nice to pat yourself on the back after a good sweat session.

Speaking of feeling good about yourself, a lot of women look up to their fitness instructors as women of strong self esteem. How do you encourage those around you to find inner strength?
I’m a firm believer that confidence has to come from within yourself, not from other people. I think it’s so important to be proud of who you are, what you stand for, and what you do. By encouraging people to always continue at working to better themselves-physically, emotionally, and spiritually-we show them how to keep growing. I get my confidence from self-acceptance, constant self-improvement and a solid support base. I accept myself for who I am- that includes owning both my best and worst qualities, since they all make me the person I am. I always tell my kids that we are all works in progress and nobody is perfect and everyday is an opportunity to better ourselves. I teach my children to love, respect, and accept themselves and that the key is to never give up on yourself and never quit trying to improve.

What’s something you love about being a mom?
Being the oldest of 3 girls, we grew up with Barbies, dresses, and ribbons. It’s such a different experience raising my 3 boys and I love watching them become little men! They are old enough to have opinions, ideas, and very interesting conversations. We love watching them play football, basketball, and lacrosse, then listening to them talk about the games afterwards. I’m just really embracing this special time when they are still young enough to want to be around their family and give hugs to their mom. They are amazing little guys and I love being around them.

Any favorite vacations spots with your family?
Vince and I love to travel, especially to the beach. Cabo San Lucas is one of my very favorite places. Plus we spend a lot of time with our family at our lake house during the summer.

What do you do for fitness when on vacation?
As I said I’m a huge fan of group exercise, so I always look for classes at the places we stay. If I’m with my sisters, which I frequently am, we do our own Fusion class in the gym together with either Francie or I leading.

Let’s talk nutrition. Any particular ideas you follow for guidance?
I’ve done every diet from cabbage soup to Atkins to South Beach. I am forever reading magazines about fitness and nutrition, and I have found that there is no quick-fix, magical diet or pill you can take. I’m 42 years old and have to be much more strict with my diet than when I was younger, so I just try to eat as clean as possible as much as I can. I am a huge believer in keeping healthy, prepared foods on hand so when I’m hungry I don’t go crazy and eat an entire bag of chips! My fridge usually has grilled chicken breasts, berries, apples, and salad and veggies washed, cut, and ready to eat. I can always count on Darby and Shawna for great recipes, and since they set up the nutrition for the Weight Loss Boot Camp and Amp Camps, they know what works and what doesn’t.

What is your favorite splurge food?
I am absolutely addicted to Reduced Fat Cheez-Its. It’s very scary and bizarre. I have boxes in my car, bedroom, closet..ALL OVER my house. This has been going on for about 2 years now, but I love them!

Do you think a gal can still drink booze and have a hot bod?
Here’s the deal: I don’t think that booze itself is the deal breaker for a hot bod, I think it’s the way you want to eat the ENTIRE next day that’s the real problem. Alcohol slows down your metabolism for three days after you drink; obviously not ideal. But the real damage is done from feeling tired and dehydrated the day after and wanting to eat your way through the day. That being said, I like to go out with my friends for cocktails so I try and do a little damage control by doing a couple of things. Hydrate before going out and drink one glass of water for every cocktail. I never have wine or beer; I like vodka with club soda or another low-cal mixer. Then, stay on top of your diet the next day! Realize that you will feel better if you stick to healthier foods, and if at all possible, try to break a sweat. That always makes you feel better.

Let’s end with a cliché, but still interesting get-to-know-you question. Name three people you’d like to get to know or learn from.
Chelsea Handler, just because she is absolutely hilarious and I love her sense of humor. How fun to have a drink with her.
Princess Diana, because along with being gorgeous, an amazing mother, and a class-act all the way around, I admire the way she used her power and popularity to help other people. She was such a strong woman and I don’t think the Royal Family was prepared to deal with that. She wouldn’t compromise who she was and what she believed in for anyone, and I would love to hear her tell her story.
Jesus Christ. I’ve been raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools my entire life. I would love the opportunity to be able to meet the “big man” and find out just what a mess he thinks we’ve made of everything. I admire the way he embraced everybody, regardless of who they were. He did what was right, not what was popular, and he stood by his choices.

 The Fun Five
Favorite restaurant: Nobu. I love good sushi.
Best place to drink a glass of wine: I don’t drink wine, but I sure do like a Stoli Doli at Capital Grille!
Beauty advice I’d like to pass on: I am a product junkie. No joke. I am a big believer in monthly facials, vitamin C serum, La Mer Eye Cream, and the magic hands of Dr. Hannah Vargas for a little boost.
Inspiring book: Fifty Shades of Grey (haa..joking.) My favorite book of all time is To Kill A Mockingbird. There are so many wonderful lessons in that little book.
I find my confidence in…Taking the opportunity to do things that allow me to grow and become a better version of myself. I am also very blessed to have an amazing support system that includes my husband, my sisters and parents, and a solid group of girlfriends. I know those people are there for me no matter what, and that gives me a lot of strength and courage.

Instructor Spotlight: Shawna Wright

Fusion's Weight Loss Bootcamps and AmpCamps have been growing in popularity ever since Shawna Wright began leading them in January 2011. We all see the amazing results and pictures posted right here on the blog every couple months, but I wanted to get a more in depth look at Shawna's history and see where her genuine love of what she does comes from.

Shawna grew up here in KC "super active" as she describes it, playing at least one sport every season. The idea of focusing on nutrition and burning calories was not high on her priority list, like most teenagers, especially because her level of activity kept her fit. However, when the college years came, she was shocked when what most dub the "freshman fifteen" hit her and just kept coming. "I swear I woke up one day with 40 extra pounds!" she says. Basketball was still a big part of her life, but as many of us have experienced, metabolism begins to slow at that age and we don't want to accept that we can't still eat like 16-year-olds. After college Shawna got married and had her three kids: Tommy, now 7, Meredith, 6, and Aggie, 2. "After my third baby I weighed more than ever and felt exhausted and overwhelmed at the thought of losing weight and working out," she says.

As fate would have it Shawna's friends, and owners of Fusion Darby and Shandi, were at that time looking for a client to train for an upcoming weight loss contest through Kansas City Fitness Magazine. Darby said they immediately thought of Shawna, knowing that throughout the years she was athletic and would have the stamina and motivation to do well. "When they asked me if I wanted to be their contestant, they knew I wasn't happy with my weight. I instantly knew I would do it...and instantly wanted to puke knowing what was in store for me!"

She spent the next three months sweating her way through 2-hour daily workouts led by "the best in the biz", a nutrition overhaul, and pure exhaustion that she says was worth every minute. She lost an amazing 57 pounds to win the contest. Just twelve weeks earlier she had been at a complete loss as to how she could find the motivation to start day one, and now she was gracing the cover of a fitness magazine. "People know that Darby can kick butt in class and knows her stuff on all things fitness and health. But the amazing thing about her is that she does all of this because she loves it; she really cares about improving people's lives and her success is a direct reflection on her passion and effort." Shawna was so grateful to the people that helped her and inspired by her own results that she began creating workouts for friends and neighbors. Darby kept nudging her to lead a similar bootcamp at Fusion, but "I never took her serious," says Shawna. "The instructors are the best, they all have killer bodies, and I simply did not have the confidence to even consider instructing classes full of incredibly fit women. I had accomplished a lot, but in my opinion, not the flawless Fusion bodies I looked up to for motivation."

Fate was at it again when her close friend Maureen, who had just had her third baby, came to Shawna with a friendly demand. "'I want you to do everything for me that they did for you' she told me, and I knew she was at the exact same point as I was earlier, saying she was DONE being miserable." The thought of helping Maureen reach similar goals was motivation to overcome her fears, so she and Darby put together a plan and enlisted two other women who had heard Shawna's story. The first Weight Loss Bootcamp was a success with the three women losing a combined 115 pounds. Maureen was so enlightened by her 45-pound loss she wanted to spread the love too and became Shawna's bootcamp assistant. In addition, her husband had just opened the Kansas City Sports Club. The enormous infield and access to cardio equipment became a perfect place to run the high-calorie-burning workouts.
Maureen and Shawna before and after. "Sure we now had a lot more fun getting dressed up and going out, but it was so much more than that," says Shawna.

Soon she was collaborating with Darby again to create the current bootcamp regime and led her second Bootcamp of 18 women, who after 12 weeks lost a total of 245 pounds. The successes kept coming and her confidence as an instructor and motivator grew as she helped women lose weight and gain fitness ability. But the most important thing to her was watching their confidence grow. "There is something magical that happens during these sessions," she says, "and it's the most incredible, positive vibe."

The second installment of the growing program, AmpCamp, was designed shortly thereafter as an option for the Bootcamp graduates to continue on with their fitness goals and offer accountability. While it did prove successful for these clients, it "really hit it's stride with those that needed a good bump in their current regime. Most participants are looking to lose about 10 pounds and become stronger, leaner athletes," she says. "I was shocked at how much certain workouts increased my distance running speed, and we have had the same results with our clients. Proof that Fusion's Shock your Body works. I've learned a lot from my clients in both the Bootcamps and AmpCamps, and together we've figured out how to create an environment for incredible success. I'm so thankful for the opportunity Darby gave me to find my health, and in turn get to help others. I love every minute of my job."

What is it about fitness that keeps you working with women and achieving such positive results?
Fitness is so important to me because of how it makes you feel. Borrowing from Sadie, another awesome instructor here, 'you never regret working out, but you usually regret skipping it.' It clears my mind and body and leaves me feeling powerful. Plus, when you don't feel good about yourself, and you don't have any energy, you start to lose who you are. It affects everyone around you. I have come so far; in the beginning I was so worried that I wouldn't be inspiring or motivating to my clients since I am not the smallest or leanest of the "Fusionistas." But as my confidence grew, I began to realize that my past struggles, and current struggles, are really the key to helping others. It's tough to put yourself out there, but it has been so important for me and I love seeing these women work so hard for what they want.

Aside from the physical training you also help with nutrition. America's rising obesity rate confirms that millions of people struggle with food; did you have similar battles?
I consider myself lucky to have found something that worked for me and wish that upon everyone. The rising obesity rate does make me sad, because I know the difference in a person's quality of life is directly affected by the way they feel. Obesity is way beyond eating too much. It involves habits, emotions, lifestyle, and so much more. I urge anyone and everyone struggling with their weight to get help. Find a friend, program or plan that works for you...and do it. 12 weeks from now, you will be happy you started today.

What's one type of food or drink that is completely off limits to you?
Definitely soda. Drinking that many calories and huge amounts of sugar is just completely not worth it to me. It makes me cringe when people drink it. I am literally embarrassed when I have to buy it at the store (once in a blue moon for guests.) I truly HATE the stuff!

What's a healthy snack that you love?
My favorite would be grapefruit..so delish and refreshing. I also have recently been adding a green smoothie in the afternoon; it's a great way to get in gobs of spinach without sitting down to a salad. Have you heard of PB2? It's interesting stuff and has been sneaking into my snacks. It's growing on me!

Any splurge foods that you just can't live without?
That would be pizza. Which actually works because when I'm craving it I can usually find or create a healhy-ish version that hits the spot. But if you are asking me what food can break me down, it's definitely sugary sweets. Old habits slip back on occasion and for me sugar is like crack. One jelly bean can trigger a day of sugar cravings, so it's way better for me just to avoid it.

So if you do have the occasional slip-up, how do you deal?
If--no--when I slip up, I attempt to counteract it with an additional workout. You can't take it back, and even if I don't burn as many calories as I consumed, working out will usually stop me from "slipping up" for the rest of day or entire weekend! We all do it on occasion, but the thing is to not just say, 'oh well, the rest of today/the weekend/this week is shot so I may as well just keep splurging.' You can start fresh on Monday, but you can also start fresh right now.

Do you follow any particular nutritionists or fitness gurus?
I do like to check into Bethenny Frankel, Jillian, Jackie Warner, and any other successful celebrity trainer/or nutritionist for fun! I am also inspired by a new blog called Share It Fitness. Love it! I actually had to break up with all sorts of food blogs and food magazines. I don't bake anymore, and that stinking Pinterest...did I just see a peanut butter cup pie on the fitness page?! I simply cannot look at it!
The Fun Five
Favorite Restaurant: Capitol Grill and the amazing Stoli Doli
Inspiring Book: I hate to admit that this once avid reader doesn't read much anymore. That is one of the few good, enjoyable habits that got bumped as the alarm started going off earlier due to my schedule. But I will share an inspiring movie: Hoosiers. It pumps me up and brings a tear to my eye every time I hear that song and cheer Hickory to the Championship! But I am way more likely to cry during an Olympic ceremony than a sappy chick flick or dog dies movie.
Best Place to Drink a Glass of Wine: I'm not a wine fan, but for the best, ice cold beer I cannot deny my family's own restaurant, Sutera's.
Beauty Advice I'd Like to Pass On: Keep it simple, and be (or become) happy!
I Find My Confidence In...: My kids and husband. At this point in our life the kids want to spend every minute with us and think I can do anything. I know this will change, but for now I try to appreciate it. My husband lets me be me, and supports me regardless. My mom is also, and has always been, a major confidence builder! She will brag about us even when we don't deserve it. Gotta love that!

Instructor Spotlight: Darby Brender

We all know Darby as the owner of Fusion, instructor of classes, and major motivator as she pushes us to do more reps than we thought possible. But aside from her passion for fitness and her genuine love of her clients, what else makes Darby tick? I sat down with her to get her favorite foods, personal exercise tips, quirky habits, and more.

With a body like yours, a lot of us wonder if you spend more time sweating than anything else during a typical day. What is your exercise regime at home, aside from teaching?
"If I workout at home, it's working on Fusion moves or doing a backyard bootcamp with my family. I do hit the gym on my own to get in some mindless cardio every week. I love the way exercise makes me feel & look. I'm a total crab when I can't exercise, it's my sanity medicine!"

What do you tell yourself when you are just too tired to work out? Darby's motto, "go big or go home" can be seen colorfully inscribed on the walls of Fusion, and she really does take this to heart to remind herself that without putting in the work, you will not see results. "Music is important" she says; she keeps her personal and Fusion workouts fresh with new downloads and motivating beats to get her sweat on.

If you happen to skip a workout or indulge on a night of eating and drinking, how do you get back on track rather than feel guilty about it?
Looking at exercise as a way of life more than just a requirement for a nice body, Darby knows that "life needs balance. I love to have a good time too." She doesn't rock her body from starving herself or torturing herself on the treadmill, she looks good because she likes to be healthy. Missing a workout isn't a big problem for her, and she'd rather not sacrifice fun events for a sweat session. "I work hard to keep both in my life," she says, "live without regrets."

Aside from fitness, what is another passion of yours?
Darby didn't start Fusion to be a money-maker, she opened the studio to be able to share her way of life with people. "Fitness and weight-loss go hand in hand," she says, "helping people feel more confident and healthy through weight loss is my biggest passion." Aside from Fusion, you can also find her rooting for Nebraska Husker Football with her friends and family.

Dossi, a little mini-Darby!

From counting calories, measuring portions, and eliminating entire food groups there are endless tips on managing nutrition from media. What works best for you?
Simplicity is key when it comes to eating; too many rules to follow can feel restricting. Being a vegetarian for 14 years, Darby's number one rule is no meat. "I also limit carbs and dairy, eat plenty of green veggies, and drink a ton of water." Simple!

You have two little blonde babies, Dossi age 5, and Will age 2. How would they describe their mom?
"Mommy is the rule-maker at our home, but Mommy is also the wacky one. At least once a week we have a major dance-off in our living room!"

Will's blonde locks can be seen running around Fusion!

What's something you love about being a mom?
"Early morning snuggles!"

As a mother, wife, business owner and more, how do you relax when you feel stressed?
Darby cites time spent with her husband and friends as the biggest way to help her unwind from the daily grind and get in much-appreciated adult time.

We all wonder if we can enjoy alcohol and a fit body in the same lifetime. Some diets restrict alcohol to only a couple drinks a week or (gasp!) none at all. What is your stance on drinking and maintaining a healthy body?
This is a tuffy, because drinking can be a relaxing habit for many. "I feel so much better when I take alcohol out of my diet; I workout harder, eat better, and just have better energy," she says. "But then again, life is about balance, and I do enjoy drinking once in a while. Just keep in mind that alcohol, especially wine, contains a ton of sugar, and that sugar works against your lean muscle mass. So all that hard work you do at 8 in the morning in the studio can  really be slowed down if you're drinking regularly. Plus, trying to get in your workout when you are hungover is BAD NEWS BEARS! You are dehydrated and your heart beats eighteen times faster." Notice increased shaky muscles when holding planks after a night out? That's your body needing water! Darby is human though, and says "don't get me wrong, this girl does like to have a good time. But I do notice I eat less healthy and have a weaker workout after a big night."

Come on, tell us, do you have any bad habits?
"Oh yeah I do! I snack late at night, I chew ice. Often times, I forget socks with my sneakers. Oh, and when I'm drinking, I don't have just one*." *See above.
What is something you are secretly talented at?
"I love to paint. I'm also pretty crafty, especially around Halloween!"

What is one food you cannot resist?
If you were hoping for an admission of a secret stash of Snickers in her kitchen drawer, think again. "Are you ready for this?! I love pickled red beets! I seriously ate a whole jar of them last night. Gross, I know."

Don't get too excited, but pretend you have an entire day to spend alone with no responsibilities. Aside from flying to an island, what would you do all day here in KC?
This was an easy fantasy to imagine for Darby. "First I'd workout, then sit in the sun and sip coffee," she says. "Then I'd stroll through the Plaza and shop." After a relaxing afternoon, she'd get in another workout and do something we'd all enjoy; take a well-deserved nap.
If you could take your family, friends and Fusion with you, where would be your ideal place to live in the world?
Raised in Nebraska and even living in Australia for a short period, Darby would choose to stay right where she is over anywhere in the world. "I seriously love Kansas City. I have this weird, magical connection with it. I don't want to be anywhere else!"

The Fun Five
Favorite restaurant: Eden Alley. I love all their yummy vegan options!
Inspiring book: Worth Every Penny by Sarah Petty and Erin Verbeck. I just got my copy; it's a must have for small business owners.
Best place to have a glass of wine: My screened-in porch. Or if I'm going out, I do love a Stoli Doli at Capital Grille, or the D Cup at Gram and Dun.
Beauty advice I'd like to pass on: Drink water and lots of it! It makes for healthy skin and a great-feeling body.
I find my confidence in...The Fusion community. The amazing and always entertaining instructors. The PR and Marketing geniuses. And clients that keep us busy and looking better and better each year.
